What is Bhastrika Pranayama
Bhastrika, or “bellows breath,” is a traditional breathing exercise in yoga that helps to increase Prana or life force in your body. It is used to energize the body and clarify the mind. It also helps in losing weight when done regularly.
The word “Bhastrika Pranayama” is comes from the Sanskrit word Bhastrika, which basically means breathing like a bellows. It is also called “the yoga breath of fire”. It produces heat in the body.
During the practice of bhastrika pranayama, both the breathing in and breathing out are forced. The purpose for this is to guarantee complete breathing cycle. This cycle helps avail more oxygen intake into the body while also making certain of complete removal of carbon dioxide during exhalation.
Benefits associated with bhastrika include tranquillity and enlightenment. As a result of complete inhalation and exhalation cycle, more oxygen is availed to the body tissues and organs while toxic gases are forced out. The long draws of breath also improve the endurance of the lungs making them healthy.
How to do Bhastrika Pranayama
- Sit on the Padmasana (Lotus Pose) or on sukhasana with eye closed.
- Take a deep breath in (inhale), filling the lungs with air.
- After that gently breathe out.
- The time taken in inhalation and exhalation should be approx 1.5 seconds. 1.5 seconds to breathe in and 1.5 seconds to breathe out.
- In the Bhastrika Pranayama Inhalation and exhalation both are forced.
- During breathe in (inhale) assume that you are taking in positive energy and vibrations.
- During breathe out (exhale), imagine that you are taking out all the toxins from the body and mind through your breathe.

2. Do not practice Bhastrika if you’re pregnant, have uncontrolled hypertension, epilepsy, seizures, or panic disorder. You should also avoid practicing bellows breath on a full stomach; wait at least two hours after eating.
