Past Continuous Tense is used to express unfinished actions in past, the tasks which were in process but not completed. It expresses continued or ongoing nature of the past action. This is also called Past Progressive Tense.
For example – ‘Ram was writing a letter’
Here Letter writing was happening in past and it was in process. Letter writing was not completed yet. Such scenarios are expressed via Past Continuous tense.
Formation of Past continuous tense:
Subject + WAS/WERE + verb + ing + rest of the sentence.
He + was + writing + letter.
Here we are adding ‘ing’ with ‘write’ verb.
WAS: With Singular third person (He, She, It, Name, I)
WERE: With plural subject (They, We, more than one name)
Past Continuous Tense is used in below scenarios:
1. Interrupted Actions of Past:
This tense is used to describe an unfinished action that was interrupted by another action in past. One task was happening, then another task happened and first task was interrupted.
Example:
Sonia was sleeping when doorbell rang.
Here, Sonia was sleeping and then action sleep was interrupted by another action doorbell rang.
2. Actions Happening at a Specific Time:
This tense is used to express ongoing action of past which was in process at a specific time.

Action running was started before 6 AM and it was in process at 6 AM.
3. Explaining Background of Stories:
This tense is also used to start the background of stories.
Examples:

The birds were singing.
The monkey was jumping.
Then the hunter appeared.
4. For stating continuous actions with emphasis with ‘always’, ‘constantly’:
Generally to show irritation about continuously happening things in past.
Example:
She was constantly complaining about her office work.
She was always coming late to the classes.
5. Actions which were happening at the same time:
To express two or more actions which were ongoing simultaneously, we use this tense.
Example:
He was playing while Ram was Studying.
